"Now, this is a story all about how some teachers turned their classrooms upside down. Let's just take a minute and sit right there and we will tell you all about the difference of chairs."

Hey EFTer's,

When we were all in school, there was no such thing as flexible seating. No such thing as inquiry-based learning or anything but sitting in a chair at a desk with a teacher standing at the front lecturing you, while you took notes. Though this strategy was clearly somewhat successful for US (I mean we went through school and are all educators), it is not for every learner. The reality is we never understood why we were doing what we were doing, or felt comfortable speaking up to show our understanding.

Now, picture your classroom as a student. Picture where you work now. Whether it be a school or a company, what does it look like? Desks filled with chairs? Rows? Cubicle? Now, think how much better you would feel if you had the choice... the choice to sit wherever you wanted in whatever type of chair or space that helped you learn, work, and be successful.

Well, NOW THAT IS GOALS!

Let's introduce you to some of the seating options in our classroom spaces.

Each of these seats (hokki stool, carpet, stand up desk, tall stools, short stools and bike desk) allows our students to choose how and where they will focus. Other options include exercise balls, couches, TV trays, short tables with cushions and believe it or not just regular desks and chairs. Some students prefer the standard because that is how they learn and that is okay!

Most of these items can be purchased from Walmart or Ikea. There are so many options in colours and shapes to fit your classroom or office theme.

Having options changes the way you work. It allows you to feel comfortable, to feel in control. To have a say in your education or workplace in a different way. Now like in every classroom there are rules.

My students are completely different people when they enter this space. They don't focus just on working with their friends but rather challenge themselves to be independent. They take ownership of their learning and are responsible for thinking of a space that they will be successful.

It is not difficult to create a space like this and even more, it is not difficult to incorporate small changes for flexible seating into your classroom or business. You, like your students or co-workers, need to be open to change and need to be flexible in your program. Then, and only then, will it be successful.

Do you use flexible seating?

Do you love it?
